A Day at Margarita Village

No two days are the same here. But this is how a typical one unfolds.

Early
AM

Mornings — Slow, Free, Yours

Before the wind picks up, life is slow. Some guests do yoga at the kite center. Others have breakfast, chill or just enjoy the calm from their bungalow. No rush. No pressure.

Upstairs at the kite center there is a terrace bar where people hang out, check the wind forecast and wait for conditions to build. It's one of those places where you arrive for a coffee and end up staying two hours.

Wind
time

When the Wind Comes In

Depending on the season, the wind usually builds mid-morning. When it's time, everyone naturally starts moving towards the water. No alarm needed — you feel it.

Before guests cross to the other side of the lagoon, our beach boys go ahead with all the kite equipment by boat. This means if the wind drops or shifts, we can change kite sizes immediately — no waiting, no lost session time.

From the kite center, everyone crosses by boat to a wide, open teaching and riding area with plenty of space for all levels. If you already ride independently, sometimes you can launch directly from the center when the wind direction allows it.

On
Water

On the Lagoon — and Beyond

Most sessions happen on Kalpitiya lagoon — flat water, shallow in many areas, consistent wind, huge space. In summer the wind is stronger and more consistent all day; in winter it typically builds from noon.

It is also possible to kitesurf on the ocean side, on the other side of the sandbar that separates the lagoon from the Indian Ocean. The conditions there are completely different — more power, open water, a different kind of riding. Just be aware that local fishermen sometimes set nets in these waters, so always check before you launch and stay alert.

On good days, spots like Dream Spot, Vella Island or Ippantivu become part of the experience — reachable by boat and absolutely worth it.

After
Kite

After the Session

After kiting, people naturally gather back at the kite center. Beer. Music. Talking about the session — the jumps, the gusts, the wipeouts. This is where the social part really happens.

Where to Eat

Lunch — during sessions we send lunch packs to the beach. You eat with a kite in the wind. That alone is worth the trip.

Sunset — beers and food upstairs at the kite center bar. This is the social hour.

Dinner — stay at the kite center (easiest, most social) or head out: Subras for simple local burgers, Dili's Kitchen — a small family place right next to the village — and Windy Waves for seafood. Most nights, people just go together.

🌴

Moving Around — Bikes, Scooters, Tuk-tuks

Most people use bicycles. You go from the village to the kite center, to the lagoon, to the beach or to town — all at your own rhythm. It gives you that small sense of freedom that you just don't get when everything is organised with drivers and schedules.

The kite center is about 800m from the village — 10 minutes on foot, 5 minutes by bike. Bikes are available at the camp. For longer explorations, scooters are easy to hire in town (around 2,000 LKR/day).

The Little Things
Nobody Else Tells You

This is not a resort. There are no wristbands, no controlled experience. This is what it is actually like.

🥥

Mind the coconuts

Seriously. They fall. Especially when you are in the shower. Welcome to the tropics — you are now one of us.

🌱

Veggie or vegan?

Not a problem. Just ask our chef at the kite center when you arrive and we will take care of you. No need to survive on plain rice.

🚗

The road is finally done

The main road to the lagoon is brand new. After 15+ years, it happened. We are still celebrating — and transfers have never been smoother.

🐸

Shower surprises

It is not unusual to find a frog in the shower. Don't panic. They live here too — and honestly, they were here before you.

🚪

Close the door

Seriously. The donkeys know how to open it and they love plants. This is not a warning — this is local knowledge. You're welcome.

"Coconuts falling, donkeys in the garden,
beers at sunset and wind almost every day.
That's pretty much it. And it's enough."

Kite conditions in detail

Where You Actually Kite in Kalpitiya

Kalpitiya has two distinct wind seasons. Summer (May–October) brings strong, consistent southern winds all day — ideal for long sessions, downwinders and kite trips to the outer islands. Winter (December–March) sees lighter but reliable northern winds building from noon — perfect for beginners and combining kite sessions with morning activities.

Beach boys ahead: Before every crossing to the lagoon, our team loads all kite gear onto the boat first. Whatever the wind does during your session, you always have the right kite available on the water.

On certain days in summer, the classic downwinder from Puttalam lagoon through the islands and towards the Wilpattu river is one of those experiences that riders talk about for years. These are not daily tours — they happen when wind, tide and the group all align. And that is exactly why they feel special.

Bioluminescent Plankton
Magic in the Dark

This is one of those experiences that nobody tells you about before you arrive — and that everyone talks about for years after.

During the summer months, on moonless nights, the waters around Kalpitiya come alive with bioluminescent plankton. You step into the lagoon and the water around you glows — electric blue, luminescent, alive. Every movement you make creates light. It is one of the most surreal natural phenomena you can experience.

"You step into the water and it lights up around you. Every stroke, every splash — pure blue light. There is nothing else like it."

We sometimes organise night trips to a smaller nearby lagoon where the concentration of plankton is even higher — away from any light pollution, with just the water glowing around you and the stars above. These trips happen when conditions are right: no moon, summer season, calm water.

It is not something you can book in advance. It is something that happens when everything aligns — which is exactly what makes it unforgettable.

Getting here

How to Get to Kalpitiya

Kalpitiya is about 2.5–3 hours from Bandaranaike International Airport. Already from this journey, you start to feel that you are not going to a typical tourist place.

  • 1
Private driver — The easiest option, especially if you travel with kite gear. We can organise it for you. Most comfortable and saves a lot of hassle.
  • 2
By bus — From the airport to Katunayake Junction, then buses towards Kalpitiya. Takes longer but it is part of the adventure. Pure local experience.
  • 3
Rent a tuk-tuk in Negombo — A slower, more adventurous way to start the trip. Some travellers love this.

FAQ — Kitesurfing Holidays in Kalpitiya

Everything you need to know to plan your kite trip to Sri Lanka.

Not at all. Kalpitiya is one of the best places in the world to learn from scratch — shallow, flat lagoon, consistent wind and IKO certified instructors with radio helmet coaching. Many guests arrive as complete beginners. See kite course options at Margarita Kite School.
Kalpitiya has two seasons. Summer (May–October) has strong consistent winds all day — great for experienced riders, kite trips and downwinders. Winter (December–March) has lighter but reliable afternoon winds — ideal for beginners and combining kite sessions with dolphin watching mornings. Both are excellent. Full kite season guide here.
Margarita Village is the rustic bungalow accommodation — wooden cabins, coconut gardens, open-air showers. The Margarita Kite School center is 5 minutes by bike — this is where lessons, equipment, the rescue boat, the bar and the restaurant are. You sleep at the village, kite and eat at the center.
Yes — it is possible to kitesurf on the ocean side of the sandbar that separates the lagoon from the Indian Ocean. The conditions are more powerful and open-water compared to the lagoon. However, local fishermen sometimes set nets in these waters, so always check with the team before launching and stay aware of what is in the water around you. We always advise on current conditions before any ocean session.
This is something we have thought about. Before every crossing to the lagoon, our beach boys go ahead by boat with all the kite equipment — multiple sizes. If the wind changes during your session, you can switch kites immediately without coming back to shore. You never lose a session because of a wind shift.
No — like the best things at Margarita Village, it depends on conditions. The bioluminescent plankton is most visible during the summer months on moonless nights. When conditions are right, we organise trips to a smaller nearby lagoon where the concentration is highest. It is one of those things you hope for and cannot plan — which is exactly what makes it so special when it happens.
Yes — pets are genuinely welcome at Margarita Village. The camp already has its own animals: ducks, a rescue dog and an occasional visiting donkey. Just let us know when you book.
