Who we are

The kite school inside the village. Same crew, same lagoon, same obsession.

Margarita Kite School has been running here since 2014. Over a decade teaching kite and wing on the Kalpitiya lagoon — one of the best flatwater spots in Asia. We're the Primary IKO Center in the area, and what matters to us isn't the badge: it's that you learn properly, progress fast, and stay safe the whole way through.

The kite center is right on the lagoon. The boat, the instructor, the helmet, the walkie. Everything's ready. You just need to show up and want to ride.

Staying at the village? Even better — 5 minutes by bike and you're at the water when the wind arrives. No fuss, no waiting around.

"You show up, you check the wind, you put on your harness. That's the rhythm here — and it works every single time."

The learning process

Kitesurf or Wingfoil? We do both.

Pick your thing — or try both. Our instructors will tell you honestly what makes more sense for your level and what you're after.

Learn to kitesurf from scratch

Most people arrive never having touched a kite before. That's the most common case — and it's the perfect starting point. The Kalpitiya lagoon is flat, shallow and has consistent wind: the best possible conditions to progress fast.

We don't follow a rigid programme. The only thing that's non-negotiable is safety — we follow IKO standards to the letter. Everything else adapts to you: your pace, the wind on the day, how you feel in the water.

1

Kite control & confidence on land

Before you get wet, you understand the kite. How it moves, what the wind does, how to control the power. No rushing — this is the foundation of everything.

2

Body dragging & water skills

Body dragging, kite control in real conditions and board recovery. What separates a safe kiter from one who isn't.

3

Water starts & first real rides

First water starts and your first proper runs. Most students are planing by the end of the course — and more importantly, they know exactly what they're doing and can keep improving on their own.

Feeling like you're not progressing fast enough? Completely normal. Every student has their own rhythm. The ones who push hardest usually improve fastest once they stop putting pressure on themselves. Our job is to get you in the water with confidence, not anxiety.

Walkie-talkie coaching: we use walkie-talkies during lessons for real-time feedback while you're out on the water. At the end of the course we certify your IKO level.

Learn wingfoil — the new addiction

Wingfoil is the discipline blowing up right now — and Kalpitiya is one of the best places in the world to learn it. Flatwater, reliable wind, plenty of space. Conditions don't get much better than this.

No background in wind sports? Perfect starting point. Already surf, kite or SUP? You'll progress faster than you think — board balance is a serious head start from day one.

1

Wing control on the beach

We start on land. You learn to handle the wing, feel the power windows and move with it without getting pulled over. The technical base before you hit the water.

2

First rides on the board

With the wing under control, you get on the board. The goal here is staying balanced while managing the wing and starting to track upwind. Flatwater = less frustration, more progression.

3

Getting the foil up

With a beginner-sized board and a wide-profile foil, you learn to lift the hull off the water. The first time the foil picks you up, everything clicks — and you'll want nothing else.

Do I need to know how to kite to learn wingfoil? Not at all. Wingfoil is its own thing — completely independent from kitesurfing. If you already kite, some concepts will feel familiar, but almost everyone starts from zero on the wing. No shortcuts, no skipping steps.

From morning to water

How a typical lesson day works

This is usually how it goes. We always adapt to the wind and to your rhythm.

📲

The WhatsApp group

As soon as you arrive, we add you to the Margarita WhatsApp group. Every morning we post the day's plan: lesson schedule, wind forecast, anything else going on. No surprises — you always know exactly what time to show up.

Meet

Meet at the kite center

Your instructor meets you right at the kite center on the lagoon. He checks your level and the conditions to plan the session properly. No standard lesson templates — every day is different and we build around you.

Some days the wind arrives early, some days it takes its time. That's kitesurfing — and honestly, waiting at the lagoon with a coffee isn't the worst thing.

Jump on the boat

When the wind's ready, we cross together to the sandbank on the other side of the lagoon — that's where we teach. Wide, shallow, no crowds. Exactly the kind of space you want when you're learning.

Leave your stuff at the beach hut while you're on the water. No stress, no watching your bag.

🪁

On the water

We normally do 2–3 hours per day, depending on the wind and your energy. Your instructor talks to you through the walkie-talkie while you're riding — real-time corrections without having to come back to shore. That's a game changer when you're learning.

🌅

After the session

Everyone naturally drifts back to the kite center. Cold beer. Music. Talking through what happened on the water. Some days we bring lunch to the beach and eat it watching kites in the wind. That alone is worth the trip.

Before you head off, sort tomorrow's plan with your instructor — so you wake up knowing exactly what's on.

Is this for you?

When to come

Wind seasons in Kalpitiya

Two main seasons. Both work well for learning — they just have a different character.

☀️ Summer — May to October

Stronger wind, usually 18–25 knots, often blowing all day. Great for longer sessions and faster progression. Best if you want to push hard or already have some level.

🌊 Winter — December to March

Softer wind, typically picking up late morning (around 11–12) and building through the afternoon. More manageable conditions — ideal for beginners who want to build confidence without getting overwhelmed.

Depends what you're looking for. Full season guide here →

Beyond the lessons

It's not just about learning to kite.

Between sessions, the village rhythm takes over. We bring lunch to the beach when the days stretch out. You spend hours between the water and the sandbank. After the sessions, everyone naturally drifts back to the kite center.

Sunset. A cold beer. Talking through the session like it was the best one yet — because honestly, it kind of was.

No pretension, just proper good vibes. Most people who come for a week end up looking for ways to stay longer. We didn't make that up — they tell us.

The questions we get most often

Straight answers. No overselling.

Not at all. Most students arrive never having touched a kite — that's the most common case. The Kalpitiya lagoon is flat, shallow and has consistent wind, making it one of the best places in the world to learn from scratch. Our IKO certified instructors use walkie-talkies during lessons for real-time feedback while you're on the water.
Most students complete the IKO beginner course in 9–12 hours of lessons spread over several days. It depends on the wind, your coordination and how you progress. We don't have rigid fixed packages — we adjust the pace to each student and to real conditions.
Both seasons work well. Winter (December–March) has lighter, more manageable wind — ideal for beginners. Summer (May–October) is stronger and more consistent, which means faster progression if you can handle more power. For first-timers we honestly recommend winter. Full season guide here.
Yes — everything is included. Kite, bar, board, harness, helmet, impact vest and water shoes. Just bring sunscreen and you're set.
We always adapt to wind conditions — that's kitesurfing. We post the daily plan in the WhatsApp group every morning. Some days start earlier, some later depending on when the wind kicks in. On no-wind days, Kalpitiya has plenty going on: dolphin watching, safaris, yoga, island trips.
Yes. Margarita Kite School is an official IKO Primary Center. At the end of your course we certify your IKO level — a recognised international certification you can use with any IKO school worldwide.
Absolutely. Wingfoil is a completely independent discipline — no kite background needed. If you already surf, SUP or do any board sport, you'll progress faster. But we start from zero with everyone regardless. The Kalpitiya lagoon is one of the best places in the world to learn wingfoil: flat water, steady wind, space for everyone.
