Authentic Kitesurfing Camp in Kalpitiya

Margarita Village is a small, rustic kite camp in Kalpitiya built day by day with heart and soul. Five charming tropical bungalows, open-air showers under the coconut trees, friendly animals roaming the gardens and a community of kite lovers from across the world.

The camp is part of the Margarita Kite School ecosystem — guests walk or cycle 10 minutes to the kite center every morning, where the whole community gathers when the wind picks up. On rest days, explore things to do in Kalpitiyayoga, dolphin watching, deserted islands and more.

Came solo and left with a whole group of new friends. The camp has incredible energy — the open-air shower is an experience in itself. Bikes made it super easy to get to the lagoon every morning.

The wooden bungalows and open-air showers are exactly as described — rustic, natural and magical. Waking up to coconut trees and cycling to the lagoon every morning is something I will never forget.

Best kite holiday I have had. The camp is authentic, the people are incredible and Kalpitiya itself is one of those hidden gems you feel lucky to have discovered.

The signature experience

Open-Air Showers Under Coconut Trees

This is the detail that guests talk about more than anything else. Returning from a long session on the lagoon, stepping into an open-air shower surrounded by tropical forest, watching the biodiversity above your head while the warm water washes the salt away.

After a shower, swing in one of the hammocks with a cold drink. Pick a book from our shelf. Or just sit and watch the ducks wander through the garden. There is a reason people extend their stays.

This is not a hotel. This is an experience you will still be talking about years from now.

Ducks, a Dog and a Visiting Donkey

Margarita Village has a crazy duck family, a very friendly disabled rescue dog and a donkey that visits from time to time and transfers the most incredible good vibes to everyone who encounters him.

We love them so much and we hope you will too. Pets are not just tolerated here — they are part of the family. Bring yours.

This is the kind of place that is not for everyone — and that is exactly the point. If you want a cookie-cutter resort, this is not it. If you want raw, real, alive Sri Lanka — welcome home.

FAQ — Kite Camp Kalpitiya

Everything you need to know before booking your stay at Margarita Village.

Margarita Village has 5 rustic wooden bungalows. The camp is intentionally small — this is what creates the community atmosphere and ensures every guest gets personal attention. Because availability is limited, we recommend booking as early as possible, especially for the peak seasons (summer: May–October, winter: December–March).
Absolutely not. Many guests come to Margarita Village simply to experience Kalpitiya — for the yoga, the dolphin watching, the many things to do in Kalpitiya and the unique community atmosphere of the camp. That said, with the kite center just 5 minutes by bike and the lagoon right there, many non-kiters end up booking a beginner lesson before their stay is over.
Margarita Village is one of the best places in Sri Lanka for solo travellers. The small size of the camp means guests naturally meet each other — at the kite center, over meals at the kite school bar, during dolphin watching excursions and on the water. Most solo travellers arrive not knowing anyone and leave with a group of close friends and plans to return together next season.
Margarita Village is the rustic bungalow accommodation — your sleeping base, surrounded by coconut trees and garden. The Margarita Kite School center is 5 minutes away by bike (bikes available at the camp) or 10 minutes on foot — this is where lessons happen, where the rescue boat departs, where the bar and restaurant are and where all guests gather when the wind picks up. The two work together: you sleep at the village, kite and eat at the center.
Yes — pets are genuinely welcome at Margarita Village, not just tolerated. The camp already has its own animals (ducks, a rescue dog and an occasional visiting donkey), so the environment is friendly for well-behaved pets. Just let us know when you book so we can ensure the best setup for you and your companion.
Kalpitiya has two kite seasons. The summer season (May–October) has strong consistent winds all day — ideal for kiting and exploring. The winter season (December–March) has lighter winds from noon, with spectacular mornings for dolphin watching and yoga in Kalpitiya. Both seasons are great stays at the camp. Outside these windows the camp may be quieter and winds less reliable — ask us for current conditions.
From Colombo or the airport, take a bus or private transfer to Puttalam (around 2.5–3 hours), then a tuk-tuk to Kalpitiya (40 minutes, around 3,500–4,500 LKR). We can help arrange a direct transfer if needed — just contact us when you book. The camp is in the Setthawadiya neighbourhood, 5 minutes from Kalpitiya town and 10 minutes from the kite center on the lagoon.
